Abstract Painting Observations During a Pandemic. 3/3 Unleashed.

“Pebbles & Marbles” is abstract painting three of three in a series reflecting on the season of a pandemic.

“Pebbles & Marbles” is painting three of three from the pandemic season completed New Years Eve, 2020. Allowing my subconscious to do the work it wasn't too surprising that confinement and what we do to fill our time between the walls became the theme of these three paintings. The fun color palette suggests optimism and hope, and a reflection of gratitude for friends, family and even the mundane.

We all found new things to do in 2020. We put together puzzles, took numerous walks around the neighborhood, zoomed cocktail hour with friends, reminisced fun travels from years past, dreamed, planned and spent time alone. Hopefully it was a time of healing, new found joys, gratitude, appreciation and silver linings in the end.

These abstract paintings are an extension of my efforts to find new ways to layer and compose works of art that are both two and three dimensional. With a strong inward sense to recycle and reuse, these mixed media abstracts incorporate single panes of clear acrylic class, painted on the front and back side, layered again with house paint, acrylic paint, oil pastel sticks, markers, spray paint and whatever else I might come across to make the work interesting and inventive.

Me and My Friends, 40" x 40" Acrylic on Multi-Panel Acrylic, Now Collected

It is exciting to announce the acquisition of “Me and My Friends” into a new collection thanks to the efforts of RARE Gallery in Jackson Hole, WY

To date, this is my largest multi-layered acrylic painting at 40” x 40”. The process that goes into creating these larger works is involved, making paintings this size rare in my collection.

Classically trained, I have been painting with multiple layers of oil on canvas for over 10 years. Today I take those layers and separate them onto individual clear panes of acrylic glass. Painting on the front and back of five panes of glass creates a visual work that is ten layers deep, 3D, sculptural, and kinetic.

Modernizing my painting process has helped me bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary art. Taking an old process of creating art and making it into something modern for our times adds what I hope to be, a lifetime of intrigue for the enjoyer of these works. My goal is that the viewer will be continually captivated when peering into one of my paintings. Each layer within, a discovery for the imagination, revealing abstract shapes, marks that cast shadows on layers below, unexpected imagery, and a wonder into the creative process, extending a simple twist to the unexpected. In these paintings are many conversations and stories that captivate, inspire, and with any luck, leave a sense of marvel.
