Collected Acrylic Paintings

Reinventing the landscape, these works are composed of five panels of transparent acrylic glass layered with ten applications of paint. The result is a three-dimensional, kinetic artwork that bridges classical technique with a contemporary aesthetic. Each piece is encased in a seamless, hand-sanded acrylic frame that allows natural light to pass through and illuminate the painted layers.

Collected Oil Paintings

These oil paintings celebrate the beauty of Western trees, inspired by road trips, camping, and hiking throughout the American landscape. Created on canvas and linen, they blend traditional and contemporary approaches to painting. Drawing from classical realist techniques, each work is built through multiple layers of paint and glaze—often exceeding ten applications—to achieve rich depth and luminosity. Whether rendered in subtle tonal harmonies or vibrant Fauvist color, the paintings reflect influences of Tonalism, Abstract Expressionism, and Fauvism, unified by a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Collected Abstract Paintings

These mixed-media abstract paintings embrace experimentation, chance, and transformation. Layering spray paint, acrylic paint, markers, pencil, acrylic glass, and other materials, Janell James creates richly textured surfaces that evolve through both intention and accident. Employing extended-handle brushes, stencils, and found objects, the work invites happenstance into the creative process, allowing unexpected discoveries to emerge. What begins in spontaneity ultimately resolves into unified compositions that celebrate the beauty of found art.

Collected Abstract Acrylic Paintings

Composed of four transparent acrylic panels painted on both sides, these works explore transparency, layering, and light. In select pieces, stencils and spray paint introduce moments of texture and gesture, while handcrafted papers are incorporated into the back layer in some works. Through the interplay of surface, shadow, and illumination, the compositions become immersive environments that shift with the viewer’s movement.

Collected Acrylic Etching and Paintings

Derived from photographs taken during the artist’s travels—most often of trees and landscapes that have also been explored through painting—these one-inch-thick laser engravings transform personal imagery into sculptural light works. Suspended before painted aluminum backgrounds, they blur the boundaries between image, object, and illumination. When activated by light, the engraved forms project onto both surface and wall, extending the work beyond its physical edge. Through shifting shadow, reflection, and depth, each piece becomes a living, three-dimensional experience.

Collected Mobiles

These mobiles are carefully crafted kinetic works that explore movement, form, and light. As they shift with air and space, they transform their surroundings into living compositions—quiet, meditative environments that invite reflection and presence.

Collected "Ain't No Wallflower"

Constructed from six to seven layers of colored acrylic glass, the Ain’t No Wallflower series marks a new direction in Janell James's practice, seamlessly blending painting and sculpture. Combining hand-painted and digitally designed elements, each work is meticulously layered to create luminous, three-dimensional compositions that transform with changing light and perspective. Inspired by floral forms and nostalgic memories of childhood pinwheels, these kinetic wall pieces celebrate the joy, delicacy, and resilience found in nature.
